A VICAR was punched by two brothers on a drink-fuelled brawl.

Gatis and Gundars Freimanis made their way through Southampton City Centre and were only stopped when the police were called to break up a fight, pinning the younger Gatis to the ground.

He was responsible for violent attacks on passers-by including Reverend Graham Archer, who happened to be in his path.

Southampton Crown court heard how Gatis, 20, first headbutted a man just outside the Soul Cellar venue shouting how he hated the English.

He then made his way through a festive German Market in the city in the run-up to Christmas, pushing over a man stood with Reverend Archer.

When Rev Archer suggested his friends should keep an eye on him, Gatis punched him in the stomach and face.

CCTV then picked up the pair with another man fighting in an alleyway just off Above Bar.

A final brawl saw Gatis punch a man and while he was being pinned down. Gundars, 21, of Burlington Road, Southampton, came to his aid and punched another man trying to help.

Both men, originally from Latvia, pleaded guilty to affray. Recorder Patrick Clarkson QC handed Gatis a nine-month jail term describing him as “the main aggressor” and Gundars a six-month jail term suspended for a year with 150 hours of unpaid work.
